Region: Vayots Dzor, Armenia
Varietal: 90% Areni, 10% Kakhet
Producer: The Yacoubian-Hobbs partnership is part of the wave reviving Armenia’s ancient wine heritage, pairing the Yacoubian family (local stewards of land in Vayots Dzor) with winemaker Paul Hobbs. Centered near the Areni-1 cave—site of the world’s oldest known winery, dated to around 4100 BC—this project is deliberately rooted in both history and place. Their “Areni” line expresses this vision: ancient indigenous grapes, high elevation, and modern winemaking come together to reestablish Armenia on the global stage as both heir to millennia of wine history and source of exciting contemporary wines.
Vineyard & Winemaking: The 2022 Areni is sourced primarily from vineyards in the Rind area of Vayots Dzor, planted at over 4,000 feet (≈1,200-meters) elevation. The vines grow in rocky, mineral-rich soils – a mix of volcanic material and limestone – that stress the vine just enough to concentrate flavor while preserving acidity in the cool mountain nights. In the cellar, winemaking is focused and precise: about 90% Areni (an indigenous, late-ripening varietal) blended with 10% Kakhet, another native grape that contributes color, structural tannin, and freshness. Fermentation and aging are done in stainless steel to preserve the grape’s pure fruit expression and clarity.
Tasting Notes: The 2022 Areni is fresh and lively, showing bright red fruit notes like wild strawberry, Morello cherry, and pomegranate, layered with subtle spice – white pepper and a suggestion of black tea. The texture is medium-bodied with brisk acidity, fine tannins, and a mineral streak that speaks of its volcanic soil. Though young, there’s elegance and lift in the finish; the wine feels vibrant now and has the structure to develop deeper complexity over the next 5-7 years.
