Region: Drama PGI, Macedonia, Northern Greece

Varietal: 80% Sauvignon Blanc & 20% Assyrtiko

Producer: Wine Art Estate was founded in 1993 when Yannis Papadopoulos — a civil engineer by training — planted a small family vineyard in Mikrochori as a personal passion project, vinifying his first wines in a simple backyard setup. Two years later architect Yannis Kalaitzidis joined the venture, and Wine Art Estate was properly born. The name Techni Alipias is itself a small act of poetry: "techni" translates as "the art of," and "alipias" as "getting rid of sorrows" — which is about as good a mission statement as any wine has ever had. The Techni Alipias White was one of the first wines in Drama to blend Sauvignon Blanc with Assyrtiko, a combination that has since become the region's signature white style — which means Wine Art didn't just make a great wine, they essentially invented a template that an entire region followed.

Vineyard & Winemaking: The estate sits at the foot of Mount Pangaion in the Drama Prefecture of Eastern Macedonia — a region with a winemaking history stretching back to ancient times, evidenced by ruins of a Sanctuary of Dionysus found nearby. The continental climate here, tempered by mountain altitude and forest cover, gives the wines a natural freshness and aromatic intensity that sets Drama apart from the warmer Aegean regions. In the cellar, each variety is vinified separately in stainless steel after cold skin maceration to extract maximum aromatic compounds, then blended after fermentation. Sur lies aging with regular stirring adds volume and textural complexity while preserving the wine's signature freshness.

Tasting Notes: The 2023 is immediately expressive and unapologetically aromatic — an exotic, tropical nose of mango, passionfruit, lime, melon, and gooseberry with a characteristic Assyrtiko mineral thread running underneath. On the palate it's medium-bodied with bright, mouthwatering acidity — the Sauvignon Blanc providing the fruit fireworks while the Assyrtiko pulls everything into focus with its characteristic crispness and mineral grip. The finish is clean, long, and refreshing. This is Greek white wine at its most immediately lovable — extroverted, energetic, and genuinely hard to put down.
