Region: Cava, Spain

Varietal: Macabeu, Xarel·lo, Parellada, and Chardonnay

Tasting Notes: This Cava is almost clear to the eye, has a diffuse column of bubbles and a nose of Gala apple and jasmine. It feels full in the mouth with bold effervescence on the palate. Brioche, lemon zest, green apple and toasted-nut flavors evaporate into a soft vanilla and citrus-blossom finish.

Producer: Founded in 1980 by four families with deep viticultural roots in the Penedès region, Vins El Cep has become a leading name in artisanal, terroir-driven Cava. The estate is located in the heart of Sant Sadurní d’Anoia—the cradle of Cava production—and has remained committed to sustainable and biodynamic farming since the early 2000s. The “Gelida” line, named after the village where the winery is located, represents the pinnacle of their sparkling wine portfolio. As a Gran Reserva, the 2018 vintage is produced only in exceptional years and reflects the estate’s focus on long aging, precision winemaking, and expressive blends that showcase the elegance and age-worthiness of traditional method Cava.

Vineyard & Winemaking: The grapes for the Gelida Brut Gran Reserva—Macabeu, Xarel·lo, Parellada, and Chardonnay—are sourced from organically and biodynamically farmed estate vineyards at elevations between 250 and 300 meters. Harvested by hand, the fruit is vinified separately and blended to achieve both balance and complexity. Secondary fermentation takes place in bottle, where the wine undergoes more than 40 months of aging on the lees before disgorgement. This extended aging imparts a refined texture and layered character that elevate Gelida beyond most Cava, delivering a sparkling wine of remarkable poise and finesse.
