Region: Rioja, Spain

Varietal: 100% Tempranillo

Tasting Notes: This 100% Tempranillo Rioja Crianza opens with inviting aromas of ripe cherry, red plum, and dried fig, layered with subtle hints of vanilla, clove, and cedar from its time in American oak. On the palate, it’s medium-bodied and beautifully balanced, with silky tannins and a fresh acidity that carries flavors of wild strawberry, tobacco leaf, and a touch of baking spice. The finish is long and refined, with a lingering echo of red fruit and savory undertones. A classic expression of Rioja that overdelivers on charm, structure, and value.

Producer: Viña Bujanda, part of the Familia Martínez Bujanda group, is a distinguished winery in Spain's renowned Rioja region. Established in 1889, the Martínez Bujanda family has a long-standing tradition of producing high-quality wines that reflect the rich heritage of Rioja. Viña Bujanda sources grapes from vineyards located in the sub-regions of Rioja Alta and Rioja Alavesa, areas celebrated for their ideal conditions for cultivating Tempranillo. The 2016 Crianza exemplifies the winery's commitment to crafting wines that honor the classic Rioja style while embracing modern winemaking techniques.

Vineyard & Winemaking: The 2016 Viña Bujanda Crianza is made entirely from Tempranillo grapes harvested from vineyards situated in Rioja Alta and Rioja Alavesa. These areas are characterized by iron-rich clay soils, which contribute to the wine's structure and complexity. The wine undergoes a 12-month aging process in American oak barrels, imparting distinctive notes of clove, cinnamon, and mild tobacco to the profile. This careful maturation enhances the Tempranillo's inherent elegance, resulting in a wine with fresh, silky tannins and a well-balanced structure. The 2016 vintage reflects the winery's dedication to producing wines that authentically express the terroir of Rioja.
