A soulful red from the little known wine region of Savoie, the ‘Ascendance’ from Uliz is everything you hope for in a rustic old-world red wine.

To say that Antoine Petitprez is committed to natural wine is putting it mildly. During his education he was responsible for a research program on the moon's effects on wines and vines. He created an association with the likes of Meo Camuzet, Domaine JJ Confuron, Alain Meunier, Liger Bel Air, Bruno Clavelier and Domaine Dujac to repeat experimentations in the vineyards and in the cellar. He’s part of a new generation in Burgundy, taking the best of tradition, soil and winemaking to tell a story of where the wines were made. Antoine develops mutually beneficial partnerships by consulting with organic farmers in exchange for their agreement to sell him grapes. His strategic networking allows him to acquire superior fruit contracts with these growers and provides him with an openness to understand their vineyard practices throughout every aspect of harvest.

The fruit for ‘Ascendance’ comes from an estate vineyard with 60-year-old vines in Saint-Jean-de-la-Porte. The plot is named 'Rochasser' meaning 'the rock' and is made up of the same limestone found in Côte de Beaune with 20-30 cm of white gravel. The 2015 'Ascendance' shows ground white pepper and old leather on the nose. On the palate there are red and blue fruits, pepper, rose petals and a beautiful earthiness that gives this wine it’s sense of place. A clean streak of minerality balances the fruit and earthiness for a lovely, long finish.
