Region: Conca de Barberà, Spain

Varietal: Garnacha, Cariñena, Querol, Monastrell and Garró

Tasting notes: Cherry red with lovely, intense depth of color. Delicious aroma of black forest fruit (blackberry) with sensual notes of dried fruit (dates) against a licorice backdrop. The palate reveals a personality-driven wine and the unmistakable character of its variety and its elegant, historical terroir. The subtle, refined tannins stand in contrast to the powerful structure of this great wine: intense, flavorful, with a distinctive identity.

Producer: Grans Muralles 2016 is one of Familia Torres’ emblematic wines and part of its Anthology collection. It comes from a historical vineyard with deep and stony soils formed by layers of slate and granite, at the foot of the walls that once protected Poblet Monastery in Conca de Barberà. Made for the first time in 1996, it is the first exponent of the project to recover ancestral varieties that Familia Torres started in the early 1980s, thanks to the inclusion of the Garró variety in its blend, while the Querol variety was also added years later. Combined with Garnacha, Cariñena, and Monastrell, these varieties create an intense wine that is aromatic and perfectly balanced, where the freshness predominates. For Miguel Torres Maczassek, from the fifth generation of the Torres family, “Grans Muralles 2016 is one of the great vintages of this decade; it shows with considerable precision the Mediterranean character that comes from its landscape and its ancient varieties.

Vineyard and Winemaking: The medieval walls of the Poblet Monastery, which once protected it from wars and mercenaries, surround our Conca de Barberà vineyard planted with red varieties. The vines grow in deep, rocky soils formed by layers of slate and granite with low water-holding capacity. Along with abundant minerals, this benefits the production of extraordinarily quintessential, concentrated wines. The historic estate lies at 500 metres above sea level, sheltered by the Sierra de Prades, and extends across 32 hectares of which six are exclusively dedicated to making this extraordinary wine – Grans Muralles. Conca de Barberà is located in the north of the province of Tarragona. It extends over a plain flanked by the rivers Francolí and Anguera and protected from the influence of the Mediterranean Sea by the mountains that surround it, especially the Sierra de Prades. Its natural resources, together with its history and traditions, make it a privileged area for winegrowing.
