Region: DO Penedès, Catalonia, Spain

Varietal: Cabernet Sauvignon 85%, Tempranillo 15%

Producer: Familia Torres has been making wine in Vilafranca del Penedès since 1870, with winegrowing roots stretching back to the 16th century — but the modern chapter of the story begins with Miguel A. Torres, the fourth generation, who returned from studying oenology in Dijon in the 1960s with a provocative idea: plant Cabernet Sauvignon in Penedès, a region then dominated by white varieties. The results were decisive. Gran Coronas — then labeled Gran Coronas Etiqueta Negra — entered the 1979 Gault-Millau Wine Olympics in Paris and outperformed some of Bordeaux's most legendary grand crus, a result that sent shockwaves through the wine world and permanently established Torres as a serious force on the international stage. The Gran Coronas you're holding today is the direct descendant of that wine: the same vision, now with over 50 years of vine age behind it.

Vineyard & Winemaking: Fruit for the 2021 is sourced from the family's Mas La Plana estate — home to some of the oldest Cabernet Sauvignon vines in Spain, now over 50 years old — blended with younger vineyard fruit from the surrounding area. The vineyards sit on deep Miocene soils with high water retention capacity and significant active limestone content, giving the wine its structural backbone and mineral character. After destemming, the fruit undergoes cold maceration before fermentation at controlled temperatures in stainless steel, followed by 12 months of aging in oak barrels. Torres has long championed sustainability across its operations, and the Penedès vineyards are managed with that same environmental commitment.

Tasting Notes: The 2021 opens with a deep ruby color and a confident, aromatic nose of blackcurrant, ripe cherry, cedar, and a whisper of spice and dark chocolate. On the palate it's well-structured and full-bodied, with ripe tannins, balanced acidity, and flavors of dark fruit, vanilla, and subtle oak that integrate cleanly through a focused, persistent finish. This is Cabernet Sauvignon that proved itself against Bordeaux half a century ago and hasn't needed to prove anything since — which somehow makes it even more enjoyable to drink.
