Region: Tuscany, Italy

Varietal: Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot

Producer: Cabreo Il Borgo’ is the iconic flagship red of Tenute del Cabreo — a project of the prestigious Florentine Folonari family whose roots go back centuries in Tuscany. First released in 1982, Cabreo helped define the modern wave of Super-Tuscan-style blends long before that label became fashionable. The wine remains a testament to the Folonari family’s philosophy: marrying Tuscan tradition with international sensibility. Over four decades, Cabreo has consistently offered structure, sophistication, and age-worthiness — making it a benchmark Italian red for drinkers who value elegance across time.

Vineyard & Winemaking: The 2020 vintage is sourced from vineyards on the rolling hills of Greve in Chianti, around 300 m asl, planted to a blend of Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Merlot. After hand-harvest, fermentation begins in stainless steel vats at controlled temperature, with a maceration of about 18 days to extract color and tannin. The wine then ages for 18 – 24 months in 225-L French oak barriques (about 30 % new, remainder older), before further bottle aging. Tasting Notes: The 2020 Cabreo Il Borgo opens with a deep, vivid ruby-garnet color and a complex bouquet of black cherry, plum, cassis, and blackberry, layered with cedar, cigar box, tobacco leaf, dark chocolate, and a hint of dried herbs and forest floor. Hints of vanilla and sweet spice from oak swirling in the glass add depth. On the palate the wine is full-bodied but refined — dense dark fruit unfolds gradually, framed by firm, polished tannins and lively acidity. The texture is plush yet structured, with a long, resonant finish marked by mineral lift, savory spice, and a touch of tobacco-driven dryness. Still youthful, it has the backbone to evolve gracefully over the next 10–15 years.
