Region: Monreale, Sicily, Italy
Varietal: 100% Nero d’Avola
Tasting Notes: Bright and juicy on the nose, with aromas of wild blackberry, blood orange, and a hint of fennel seed. The palate is supple and fruit-forward, showing layers of plum, crushed cherry, and black tea, framed by smooth tannins and a gentle mineral lift. It finishes with freshness and spice—versatile enough for pizza night, yet serious enough for slow-braised meats.
Producer: Part of the historic Tasca d’Almerita family of estates, Tenuta Sallier de La Tour lies in Monreale, just southwest of Palermo. Since the 19th century, the Tasca family has been instrumental in shaping the quality wine movement in Sicily, and this estate is devoted almost exclusively to showcasing Nero d’Avola—Sicily’s flagship red grape. Their commitment to sustainability and site expression has helped redefine what Nero d’Avola can be: not just powerful and sun-drenched, but elegant, nuanced, and terroir-driven.
Vineyard & Winemaking: The fruit for this bottling comes from vineyards nestled in the Jato Valley, where altitude and diurnal shifts temper Sicily’s Mediterranean heat. Soils here are a mix of clay and limestone, offering both structure and freshness. The wine is fermented in stainless steel and aged in a combination of large neutral oak barrels and concrete tanks to preserve varietal purity while adding subtle texture. The result is a Nero d’Avola that balances approachability with authenticity—a true expression of place and variety.
