Producer: Tenuta di Salviano is part of a historic Umbrian estate with roots going back to the Corsini family in the 1600s, and today is stewarded by the Incisa della Rocchetta family, renowned in Italian wine circles (they also created Sassicaia). While Salviano produces a range of whites and rosés, their red Turlo has become a flagship expression of the estate’s commitment to quality, marrying Umbrian soil and Mediterranean climate with a blend that bridges traditional Italian varietals and international influence. Turlo represents the modern Umbrian red — versatile, food friendly, and expressive of the rolling vineyards around Lake Corbara.
Vineyard & Winemaking: The 2022 Turlo draws on vineyards planted on the hillsides surrounding Lake Corbara at roughly 150–450 m elevation, where volcanic-tuffaceous soils and warm days tempered by lake breezes promote ripe fruit and freshness. The wine is a blend of Sangiovese, Merlot, and Cabernet Sauvignon, each vinified separately with controlled temperature fermentation and gentle maceration of about 10–12 days, followed by malolactic conversion. After fermentation, the wine spends time aging in stainless steel and a small amount of French oak to build texture and integrate structure without overshadowing varietal fruit and regional character.
Tasting Notes: The 2022 Turlo pours a deep ruby hue and launches with expressive aromas of blackberry, black cherry, violet, and a hint of Mediterranean herbs. On the palate it is medium-to-full-bodied with juicy dark fruit balanced by bright acidity, smooth but present tannins, and savory notes of tobacco, peppercorn, and a touch of cedar from its subtle oak influence. The finish is warm, lingering, and well-balanced — a versatile red that pairs beautifully with grilled meats, rustic pastas, and aged cheeses, and one that will continue to develop complexity with a few more years in cellar.
