Region: Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Italy
Varietal: 100% Merlot
Tasting Notes: In the glass, the 2018 ‘Campo del Viotto’ is inky and brooding, offering layers of ripe blackberry, plum compote, and violet, framed by hints of tobacco, baking spice, and worn leather. The palate is plush and full-bodied but finely tuned, with velvety tannins and balanced acidity lending structure to its generous fruit. Notes of dark chocolate and espresso emerge on the finish, which lingers with a quiet intensity. A serious Merlot with both muscle and finesse — and one that will continue to evolve for years to come.
Producer: Scarbolo is a family-run estate in Friuli-Venezia Giulia, a region better known for its white wines than bold reds — which makes ‘Campo del Viotto’ all the more intriguing. This wine is the result of founder Valter Scarbolo’s longtime admiration for Merlot, a grape that has deep roots in Friuli but rarely receives this kind of star treatment. ‘Campo del Viotto’ is not just a showcase of Friulian terroir, but also of Scarbolo’s commitment to producing age-worthy, complex reds that challenge expectations.
Vineyard & Winemaking: The wine comes from a single vineyard called “Campo del Viotto,” located near the town of Lauzacco. After meticulous vineyard management and a manual harvest, the grapes undergo a unique vinification: part of the fruit is dried slightly on the vine, intensifying concentration and structure. Fermentation takes place in oak vats, followed by a lengthy élevage in a mix of small barrels and larger oak casks — all aimed at coaxing out depth and texture while preserving freshness. The result is a wine that marries international polish with a distinctly Friulian soul.
