Region: Côtes de Gascogne, Sud-Ouest, France
Varietal: 75% Tannat, 25% Cabernet Sauvignon
Producer: Plaimont is one of southwestern France’s most ambitious cooperative ventures, formed in the late 20th century by local growers determined to revitalize Gascony’s wine culture and economy. Drawing on the collective expertise of around 800 member families and the visionary leadership of figures like André Dubosc, Plaimont has helped transform the Côtes de Gascogne IGP from a largely white-wine region into a source of vibrant, approachable reds, rosés, and whites. The Papa Roc label exemplifies this spirit — a wine designed to showcase both the region’s indigenous varieties and the cooperative’s commitment to freshness, balance, and everyday enjoyment.
Vineyard & Winemaking: The 2024 Papa Roc is grown within the IGP Côtes de Gascogne zone — a broad, gently sloping landscape shaped by clay-limestone and sandy soils between the Pyrenees foothills and the Atlantic influence. While exact blends can vary by producer and vintage, this cuvée is typically built around Cabernet Sauvignon and Tannat, with short maceration periods (12–24 hours) that yield a fresh, vibrant style rather than heavy tannic extraction. Fermentation and élevage are uncomplicated — primarily in stainless steel — to preserve fruit purity, bright acids, and aromatics that express Gascony’s laid-back terroir and climate.
Tasting Notes: The 2024 Papa Roc pours a luminous ruby with lively carmine highlights. The nose lifts with fresh red berries — wild strawberry and raspberry — accented by subtle floral whispers and a hint of herb. On the palate, the wine is light- to medium-bodied, driven by juicy red fruit and a gentle, supple structure framed by soft tannins and bright acidity. A touch of spice and a clean, persistent finish give it a refreshing ease, making it delightful slightly chilled or at room temperature. It’s a wine built for conviviality and simple pleasures — perfect with charcuterie, grilled poultry, or rustic dishes that mirror Gascony’s relaxed charm.
