Region: Valpolicella Classico, Veneto, Italy
Varietal: 60% Corvina, 35% Rondinella, 5% Molinara
Producer: Pietro Clementi—originally a lawyer and long-time mayor of Marano di Valpolicella—acquired his historic 17th-century estate in the Gnirega Contrada in 1969, marking his shift into winemaking. Over time, the estate has remained a family-run operation that emphasizes tradition over trends, with Pietro and now his children working to preserve the character of Valpolicella Classica rather than chasing extraction or new-oak flash.
Vineyard & Winemaking: The 2023 Valpolicella Classico is a co-fermented field blend drawn from Clementi’s vineyards in the Classica zone—planted at around 300–400 m altitude on ancient “marogne” terraces composed of limestone, clay and stone rubble. The blend is approximately 65% Corvina, 30% Rondinella and 5% Molinara (with a small amount of Oseleta) according to the producer. Fermentation is conducted with indigenous yeasts in stainless steel, with minimal aging and no heavy oak influence—designed to preserve freshness, bright red-fruit expression and a sense of place.
Tasting Notes: The 2023 Valpolicella Classico offers a lively ruby hue and aromas of vivid cherry, wild raspberry and a subtle floral touch of rose petal. On the palate it is light-to-medium in body, with crisp acidity and juicy red-fruit flavours framed by fine tannins and a touch of mineral drive. The finish is clean, crisp and persistent—a wine meant for early drinking yet fashioned with enough elegance to pair beautifully with a wide range of dishes.
