Region: Barolo, Piedmont, Italy
Varietal: 100% Nebbiolo
Producer: Perla Terra is a unique Barolo project launched by the importer Dalla Terra in collaboration with small growers across some of the region’s finest crus including La Morra, Novello, Monforte d’Alba, Grinzane Cavour and Verduno. Though a recent label, its roots run deep—growing from the shared expertise of growers, the prestige of the Barolo zone, and a goal to deliver high-quality Nebbiolo at accessible pricing. From its debut vintage this wine has built a reputation for offering classic Barolo structure and elegance at a value rarely seen in the region.
Vineyard & Winemaking: The 2018 Bottling is sourced from a combination of vineyard sites across the Barolo zone, each identified and vinified separately before blending. The wine is made from 100% Nebbiolo grown on classic Barolo soils—Tortonian marl and limestone—with vines of modest age and sustainably farmed (the project’s vineyards are designated as “sustainable”). Following hand-harvest, fermentation occurs with traditional methods in stainless steel or large vats, then the wine is matured for a minimum of 18 months in large oak casks (a portion in new French oak) before bottling.
Tasting Notes: Now with several years of cellaring behind it, the 2018 Perla Terra Barolo shows graceful evolution. Aromas of dried cherry, rose petal, blackberry preserve and subtle forest-floor arise, joined by cocoa, worn leather and soft spice from oak ageing. On the palate the fruit remains vivid yet integrated, with elegant tannins that have softened into a refined structure, fresh acidity providing lift, and a long finish marked by iron-laden minerality and bittersweet cherry skin. It’s now drinking beautifully, while still offering the depth and tension that promise further evolution in cellar over the next 4–6 years.
