"Paitin's 'Starda' is a knockout example of Nebbiolo, with complexity and structure that goes well beyond a basic Langhe designation...in fact, this gives many producers' village level Barolo and Barbaresco a run for the money!"
Paitin is one of the oldest wineries in Barbaresco. The winery started in 1796, when Benedetto Elia purchased 5 acres of vineyard in Bricco di Neive planted in Nebbiolo and Barbera. 30 years later he purchased the house, the cellar and 5 more acres of Nebbiolo. The wines were sold in barrels for years until his nephew, Giuseppe, in 1890, built the “new” section of the winery, started in the 15th century, and bottled the first Barbaresco, Nebbiolo and Barbera. Paitin's mission is to make wines that reflect their special terroir, maintaining the character of the grapes and the connection with the soil that creates the best possible match with fine food. This bottling is of 100% Nebbiolo coming from estate vineyards in the Starda parcel on the Bricco di Neive cru. Hand-harvested. Practicing organic. Practicing biodynamic.
Infused with classic scents of cherries, tobacco, and menthol, this delicious Nebbiolo has rich dark fruit, muscular tannins, and a depth and weight that is most impressive at this price point.
