Region: Piedmont, Italy
Varietal: 100% Arneis
Tasting Notes: Bright and floral, the 2023 ‘Elisa’ offers aromas of orchard blossoms, chamomile, and pear skin. The palate is crisp and nuanced, with notes of citrus pith, white peach, and a savory, mineral finish. Elegant and pure, it’s a pitch-perfect expression of Roero’s signature white grape.
Producer: Paitin is a family-run estate in Piedmont with deep roots dating back to 1796, when Benedetto Elia purchased the property in Neive. Best known for its Barbaresco, the estate has always embraced traditional winemaking while thoughtfully integrating modern techniques over time. Now helmed by the younger generation, Paitin continues to honor its heritage with a renewed focus on clarity, precision, and expressive site-driven wines. The ‘Elisa’ bottling pays tribute to a family matriarch and reflects the estate’s commitment to highlighting the breadth of Piedmontese terroir—not just through Nebbiolo, but also through native white varieties like Arneis.
Vineyard & Winemaking: The Arneis for ‘Elisa’ is grown in the sandy, fossil-rich soils of Roero, across the Tanaro River from Barbaresco. These soils are particularly suited to Arneis, yielding wines that are aromatic and textured yet lively. The grapes are farmed organically and harvested by hand, then fermented in stainless steel with native yeasts to preserve freshness and varietal character. Aging takes place in tank on the fine lees for several months, enhancing mouthfeel without obscuring the wine’s delicate aromatics and stony minerality.
