Region: Abruzzo, Italy

Varietal: 100% Montepulciano

Producer: La Valentina was founded in 1990 by the Di Properzio brothers and over the years has grown into a benchmark of modern Abruzzo wine-making, blending respect for tradition with a commitment to sustainability and terroir expression. Located in the hills above Spoltore (near Pescara), the estate has focused on indigenous varieties — especially Montepulciano — and has helped reinforce Abruzzo’s reputation for accessible yet authentic wines. The 2022 Montepulciano d’Abruzzo continues this mission, offering a “house-style” red that encapsulates the region’s character in a value-driven bottle.

Vineyard & Winemaking: The 2022 wine is made from 100% Montepulciano grapes grown at 150–400 m elevation in the communes of Spoltore, San Valentino and Scafa. Soils are medium-clay, and vines are trained either in the traditional “Pergola Abruzzese” or Guyot systems. Harvest is done by hand, usually beginning mid-to-late September. Fermentation and maceration last roughly 10 days in stainless steel vats; after malolactic fermentation, about 20% of the wine is matured in Slavonian oak casks and second-passage barriques to add structure, while the remaining 80% remains in steel — a balanced approach that preserves fruit vibrancy and freshness while introducing subtle complexity.

Tasting Notes: The 2022 Montepulciano d’Abruzzo glows deep ruby in the glass, opening with inviting aromas of blackberry, plum skin, and violet, underscored by hints of cocoa, black pepper, and dried herbs. On the palate it’s medium-to-full bodied with juicy dark fruit at the core, framed by firm yet smooth tannins and bright acidity that keeps it lively. Subtle earthy and mineral undertones add depth, while a finish of black cherry, spice, and a touch of mentholated freshness leaves a pleasing, slightly savory trail. It’s an excellent everyday red — hearty, expressive, and true to its Abruzzo roots.
