Region: Cirò DOC Classico Superiore, Calabria, Italy

Varietal: 100% Gaglioppo

Producer: In 1845, Vincenzo Ippolito stamped his initials on a country house surrounded by vineyards, olive groves, and orange trees in the heart of Cirò Marina — and the winery that bears his name has been going ever since, making it Calabria's oldest. Located along the Ionian Sea coast in what is one of Italy's most overlooked wine regions, Ippolito has spent over 175 years doing something quietly radical: betting everything on indigenous grapes at a time when much of southern Italy was busy ripping them out for international varieties. At the heart of that mission is Gaglioppo — Calabria's great native red — and the Liber Pater, named for the ancient Italic god of wine, is the estate's tribute to what this grape can do. The name is fitting: Liber Pater was also the patron deity of plebeians, the people's god — and this is very much a people's wine.

Vineyard & Winemaking: The estate farms over 100 hectares across three properties — Mancuso, Feudo, and Difesa Piana — in the rolling hills near the Ionian Sea, planted exclusively to native varieties: Gaglioppo, Greco Bianco, Calabrese, Pecorello, and Greco Nero. Gaglioppo thrives here, where elevation tempers the intense coastal heat and the dry climate concentrates the fruit naturally. The Liber Pater is fermented in stainless steel to preserve freshness and fruit integrity, then aged in barriques — a touch of oak adding complexity and depth without obscuring the grape's inherently vibrant character. The result is a modern expression of Cirò that respects tradition without being trapped by it.

Tasting Notes: The 2023 pours ruby red with light purple hues and opens with an inviting bouquet of wild berries, violets, spice, and a soft thread of oak. On the palate it's juicy and fruit-forward — crushed raspberry, wild cherry, and a whisper of licorice — with cooling acidity that keeps everything lifted and the finish refreshingly clean. Gaglioppo shares a kinship with Nerello Mascalese from Etna, and you can feel that here: a Mediterranean red with more grace and energy than its sun-drenched origins might suggest. At this price, it's one of Italy's most compelling steals.
