Region: Hautes-Côtes de Nuits, Burgundy, France
Varietal: 100% Pinot Noir
Producer: Domaine Gros Frère et Sœur is a storied Vosne-Romanée producer with roots going back to 1830, when the Gros family first began farming vineyards in the heart of Burgundy’s Côte de Nuits. The estate took its modern name in 1963, when siblings Gustave and Colette Gros combined their portions of their family holdings and later passed the domaine on to their nephew Bernard Gros, who has revitalized and expanded the vineyards while honoring the family’s heritage. Today the domaine is still family-run, with the next generation (Elodie and Vincent) working alongside Bernard to uphold their legacy of classic Burgundian winemaking.
Vineyard & Winemaking: The 2019 Bourgogne Hautes-Côtes de Nuits comes from higher-elevation sites north of Vosne-Romanée in the Hautes-Côtes de Nuits — a cooler, windswept slice of Burgundy that often yields wines with more energetic acidity and lifted aromatics. It is 100% Pinot Noir, hand-harvested and destemmed early to ensure purity and balance. While Gros Frère et Sœur uses careful cellar technique across its range — including optical sorting and yeast selection drawn from their premier crus — Hautes-Côtes lots are typically fermented and matured with respect to freshness and regional identity, often seeing gentle oak influence and extended aging on fine lees to build texture without overshadowing terroir.
Tasting Notes: The 2019 Bourgogne Hautes-Côtes de Nuits shows a clear ruby hue with garnet hints at the rim. Aromas of wild cherry, raspberry blossom, and cranberry are laced with notes of underbrush, violet, and a hint of spice — a classic Burgundian perfume where fruit and florals intersect. On the palate it’s medium-bodied and energetic, with precise acidity framing ripe red fruit and a touch of savory earth; fine, polished tannins carry through a lingering finish that brings minerality and a whisper of forest floor. Now drinking well, it still has structure to gain nuance with a few more years of cellaring.
