Region: Saint-Nicolas-de-Bourgueil AOC, Loire Valley, France

Varietal: 95% Cabernet Franc, 5% Cabernet Sauvignon

Producer: The Amirault family has been farming Le Clos des Quarterons for over 180 years — six generations deep in one of the Loire Valley's most quietly distinctive appellations. Today the estate is run by Xavier Amirault and his wife Agnès across a 92-acre property divided into 53 individual plots, primarily planted to Cabernet Franc and Chenin Blanc. Certified organic by Ecocert and biodynamic by Demeter since 2013, Xavier's approach to farming is hands-on in the most literal sense: the family gathers meadowsweet, nettle, yarrow, dandelion, and horsetail from the land itself, infuses them, and sprays the resulting preparations across the vines — a biodynamic practice rooted in the belief that a healthy vineyard ecosystem begins with what's already growing there. This is a domaine that earns its certifications rather than wearing them as marketing.

Vineyard & Winemaking: Saint-Nicolas-de-Bourgueil sits on the right bank of the Loire, and its soils set it meaningfully apart from neighboring Cabernet Franc appellations like Chinon or Saumur-Champigny — sandier, lighter, and warmer, producing wines with a natural lift and aromatic delicacy that the heavier clay and tuffeau soils of those appellations rarely match. The vines for Les Quarterons lie on gentle south-facing slopes, sheltered to the north by forest that protects against cold winds. Winemaking is deliberately restrained: low-intervention vinification and aging entirely in tank, preserving the freshness and fruit purity that define Saint-Nicolas at its best.

Tasting Notes: The 2022 is Cabernet Franc in its most joyful register — bright purple-red in the glass, with an aromatic, perfumed nose of fresh raspberries, red plums, violets, and a characteristic whisper of green herb. On the palate it's dry, light-to-medium-bodied, and irresistibly fresh: silky tannins, lively fruit acidity, and a clean, spice-tinged finish with just enough grip to remind you this is serious wine having a great time. Saint-Nicolas has a featheriness that makes you reach for another glass before you've finished the first — and this is a textbook example of exactly that.
