Region: Tasmania, Australia
Varietal: 100% Chardonnay
Tasting Notes: The 2023 Devil's Corner Chardonnay presents a bright, pale straw hue with green highlights. The nose offers zesty melon aromas alongside riper yellow peach. On the palate, it is fresh, youthful, and appealing, featuring zingy citrus flavors of lemon and grapefruit, complemented by subtle creaminess from neutral oak. The finish is bright and zesty, showcasing the wine's cool-climate acidity.
Producer: Devil's Corner, established in 1998 and now part of the Brown Family Wine Group, is situated on Tasmania's East Coast. The winery's name originates from a treacherous bend in the Tamar River, dubbed "Devil's Corner" by early sailors. This challenging environment has inspired the winery to craft wines that embody the resilience and character of their surroundings.
Vineyard & Winemaking: The Chardonnay grapes for the 2023 vintage are sourced from estate vineyards in Tasmania's Tamar Valley and East Coast. These regions offer a cool, maritime climate ideal for Chardonnay, with cold nights and mild days contributing to the grapes' vibrant acidity and flavor development. The vineyards' proximity to the ocean provides natural protection from extreme weather, ensuring consistent ripening. In the winery, the focus is on minimal intervention to preserve the fruit's natural expression. Techniques such as fermentation in stainless steel and aging in seasoned French oak puncheons are employed to add subtle complexity without overshadowing the wine's freshness.
