Region: Piedmont, Italy

Varietal: 100% Barbera

Tasting Notes: The 2022 Barbera d'Alba Vignota is a lovely expression with elegant fruit, dried blueberry, blackcurrant and a dusty mineral note that frames it all with neat and delineated lines. It displays medium fruit weight and a high 15% alcohol content that is absorbed by the wine's thick texture. That said, this is by no means a heavy wine.

Producer: Founded in 1982, Conterno Fantino is a hallmark of the Langhe region, thanks to the vision of Claudio Conterno and winemaker Guido Fantino. Set in the picturesque Monforte d'Alba, their state-of-the-art winery overlooks the historic vineyards and the majestic Alps. The property spans 57 acres, with vines planted on steep slopes with a mix of sand, silt, and clay soils. Known for their Barolo, the duo also shines with their Vignota Barbera d’Alba, a 100% Barbera wine. With roots in the noble cru Ginestra vineyard, this winery has earned a reputation for blending Piedmont’s opulent structure with a modern approach, using French oak barriques for aging.

Vineyard & Winemaking: Conterno Fantino’s Vignota Barbera d'Alba comes from organically grown grapes planted between 1980 and 1998, on limestone and marl soils. The vineyards, at altitudes ranging from 200 to 400 meters, are meticulously maintained using sustainable practices like geothermal energy and solar panels. Hand-harvested and fermented in stainless steel, this Barbera is aged in French oak, highlighting the winery's commitment to environmental stewardship and careful craftsmanship. Their focus on spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts, minimal sulfites, and a gentle aging process ensures the wine truly reflects the unique terroir of the Langhe.
