Region: Monforte d’Alba, Piedmont, Italy
Varietal: 100% Nebbiolo
Tasting Notes: Bright and lifted, the 2022 ‘Ginestrino’ opens with notes of sour cherry, rose petal, and crushed raspberry, layered with hints of anise and dried herbs. The palate is nimble yet structured, with fine, youthful tannins and a refreshing core of red fruit. Elegant and expressive, it offers a clear-eyed introduction to the Nebbiolo grape and the terroir of Monforte, making it a versatile partner for food—or a satisfying glass on its own.
Producer:Founded in 1982 by friends Guido Fantino and Claudio Conterno, Conterno Fantino has become one of the most respected names in Barolo, celebrated for combining traditional Piedmontese values with modern precision. Perched above the village of Monforte d’Alba, the estate quickly made its mark with wines that balance power and finesse—qualities that reflect both the pedigree of their vineyards and their thoughtful, detail-oriented approach. Over the years, the winery has earned a reputation not only for crafting compelling Barolos but also for elevating their regional offerings, including Langhe Nebbiolo, to a level of serious, site-driven expression.
Vineyard & Winemaking: The ‘Ginestrino’ is sourced from younger vines in the cru Ginestra and nearby vineyards, all situated in the rolling hills around Monforte. These sites feature classic calcareous-clay soils and benefit from excellent sun exposure, giving the Nebbiolo fruit structure and aromatic complexity. Farming is organic, and the winery employs gravity-fed systems and sustainable practices throughout the winemaking process. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel, followed by aging in used French oak barrels for about 10 months—just enough time to soften the tannins and add dimension without overshadowing the fruit.
