Region: Alba, Piedmont, Italy

Varietal: 100% Dolcetto

Producer: Conterno Fantino is one of Piedmont’s newer estates—founded in 1982 by Claudio Conterno and Guido Fantino—but it’s quickly become respected for combining modern technique with a reverence for the Langhe’s hill-terroir. While better known for Barolo and Barbera, the estate’s commitment to expression and quality extends into its Dolcetto offering. The “Bricco Bastia” bottling is a window into what Dolcetto can achieve when given thoughtful care—approachable upon release, yes, but with enough precision and identity to reward attention.

Vineyard & Winemaking: “Bricco Bastia” comes from organically farmed vines planted in 1989 on clay-limestone soils in Monforte d’Alba at about 540 meters elevation. Exposure is south, east, and west, allowing for balanced sun exposure and cooling influences. The grapes are hand-harvested in early September, then fermented in stainless steel with short maceration (about 6-8 days) to capture freshness and primary fruit. After fermentation, the wine remains in stainless steel—no oak aging—so the varietal character and vineyard soil shine through without overlay.

Tasting Notes: The 2023 “Bricco Bastia” Dolcetto d’Alba shows bright red cherry and raspberry aromas laced with fresh herbs and a hint of wild fennel. On the palate it’s juicy yet crisp, with clean acidity and silky texture, offering flavors of cherry skin, strawberry, and subtle peppery spice. The finish is smooth, moderately long, and delightfully fruity with just a touch of minerality—perfect for drinking now, especially with lighter-based dishes like pasta, roasted vegetables, or grilled meats.
