Region: Beaujolais, Burgundy, France
Varietal: 100% Gamay
Tasting notes: With a beautiful intense purple color, this Brouilly opens with floral notes, black fruits and dark chocolate. The palate is dense, fleshy and elegant with hints of toffee and peonies. The tannins are smooth and silky. You'll also find the mineral touch that characterizes the wines of Pierreux.
Producer: Amid 250 acres of land facing Mont Brouilly, 190 planted exclusively with Gamay grapes, Château de Pierreux is one of the region’s most breathtaking estates. Steeped in several centuries of history and set at the heart of a landscape that expresses the soul of the Beaujolais, the château embodies the spirit of the region at its noblest. Farmed according to Biodynamic principles, its two offerings – Brouilly Château de Pierreux and the Réserve du Château de Pierreux – reveal the best of Cru Beaujolais winemaking.
Vineyard and Winemaking: Gamay was grown throughout all of Burgundy until 1395 when the Duke of Burgundy banished it south, making room for Pinot noir to inhabit all of the “superior” hillsides of Burgundy proper. This was good news for Gamay as it produces a much better wine in the granitic soils of Beaujolais, compared with the limestone escarpments of the Côte d’Or.
