Region: Chateau des Vergers, Beaujolais Lantignie Blanc 2021
Varietal: 100% Chardonnay
Producer: Château des Vergers is a historic estate in Beaujolais-Lantignié, a small but increasingly respected sub-region of Beaujolais with ancient vineyard roots and a rising reputation for terroir-driven wines. Now led by Cosima Bassouls, who took over in 2018 and began converting the family’s vineyards to organic farming in 2019, the domaine combines centuries-old tradition with modern ecological practices. Cosima’s vision emphasizes biodiversity, cover crops, and low-intervention winemaking, helping put Beaujolais-Lantignié on the map as a place where both classic reds and quality whites can thrive.
Vineyard & Winemaking: The 2021 Le Blanc comes from a single parcel planted to 100 % Chardonnay at around 300 m elevation on pierres bleues (blueschist) soils, which are known locally for imparting minerality and freshness. Harvested by hand and pressed very gently using the estate’s historic vertical press, the must is naturally clear and typically needs minimal handling. Fermentation begins with a pied de cuve of native yeasts in neutral fiberglass or concrete, and the wine spends about eight months on the lees without bâtonnage, allowing texture to build naturally. A small amount of sulfur is added only at bottling, underscoring the domaine’s commitment to minimal intervention.
Tasting Notes: The 2021 Le Blanc shines with pale golden color and a fragrant nose of lemon curd, lime zest, green apple, and chalky stone, with a hint of brioche-like richness that speaks to lees aging. On the palate, it’s crisp and focused: bright citrus and orchard fruit are balanced by saline minerality and fine grip, while a subtle floral lift adds complexity. The finish is clean and refreshing, with lingering minerality and just enough weight to pair beautifully with seafood, roasted chicken, or creamy cheeses — a compelling white from a region better known for reds.
