Region: Moulin-à-Vent, Beaujolais, France
Varietal: 100% Gamay
Tasting Notes: The 2021 'Clos de Rochegrès' opens with a reserved nose of pomegranate, red and black cherry, rhubarb, forest floor, and black plum, accented by hints of dried hay. On the palate, streaks of granite and wet river stone emerge, running in parallel with tart red fruit. It’s already drinking beautifully with a balance of vibrancy and depth, but it has the structure and finesse to evolve gracefully for many more years.
Producer: Château des Jacques, situated in the heart of Moulin-à-Vent, has long been recognized for producing wines that bridge the gap between Beaujolais and Burgundy. Since its acquisition by Maison Louis Jadot in 1996, the estate has undergone significant revitalization, focusing on expressing the unique terroirs of its various climats. The 'Clos de Rochegrès' is one of the estate's most esteemed parcels, showcasing the potential of Gamay when cultivated with precision and care.
Vineyard & Winemaking: The 'Clos de Rochegrès' vineyard spans approximately 9 hectares on the slopes of Moulin-à-Vent, characterized by shallow pink granite soils interspersed with quartz and a high manganese content. These conditions contribute to the wine's depth and minerality. In 2021, the grapes were hand-harvested and underwent a meticulous vinification process, including a slow maceration period of three to four weeks with both pigeage and pumping over. The wine was then aged for 10 months in a combination of new and seasoned oak barrels sourced from Allier, Limousin, and Nivernais forests, allowing it to develop complexity while preserving its vibrant fruit character.
