Region: Tuscany, Italy
Varietal: 100% Sangiovese
Tasting Notes: Very floral in aroma, the palate shows tart cherry and boysenberry flavors. Rich, but with fresh acidity and grippy tannins. Exactly what you want from Tuscan Sangiovese.
Producer: Caparzo, an estate in Montalcino, Tuscany, was founded in the late 1960s when a group of wine enthusiasts purchased a property with vineyards. In 1998, Elisabetta Gnudi Angelini acquired the estate and, with her family, revitalized it, blending tradition with innovation. Caparzo is now recognized for producing high-quality Brunello di Montalcino wines, continuing its legacy as one of the region’s iconic producers.
Vineyard & Winemaking: Caparzo spans 494 acres, with 223 acres of vineyards planted across Montalcino’s best DOCG areas. With varied soils and altitudes, the estate grows Sangiovese, implementing both traditional and modern winemaking techniques. The Sangiovese Toscana is made from grapes from the three estates, Caparzo, Borgo Scopeto and Doga delle Clavule. The family crest works surprisingly well to illustrate the concept: the shield bears three roses that represent the three estates.
