Region: Alto Adige, Italy

Varietal: 100% Lagrein

Producer: Cantina Colterenzio is a unique cooperative in Alto Adige/Südtirol, founded in 1960 by around 300 wine-growing families. The winery has embraced modern sustainable practices—including ecological design of its cellar and vineyard work guided by terroir-sensibility—to lift the reputation of the native Lagrein grape and the region as a whole. The Lagrein bottling is a compelling example of how Alto Adige natives can deliver serious red wines that combine Alpine freshness with South Tyrolean identity.

Vineyard & Winemaking: The grapes for the 2022 Lagrein come from vineyards at altitudes ranging roughly 230 to 650 meters, planted across clay-rich and sandy soils shaped by the Alpine-Dolomitic foothills. In the cellar, fermentation begins with a skin contact period of about 8 days in stainless-steel tanks, followed by malolactic conversion, and several months of refinement in concrete or large wooden vats to bolster texture while maintaining clarity of fruit. The overall approach emphasizes varietal purity, vineyard expression and moderate oak impact.

Tasting Notes: The 2022 Lagrein opens with deep garnet tones and violet reflections, offering aromas of black and red woodland berries, bilberry, and a delicate floral note of violet. On the palate it is medium- to full-bodied with velvety tannins, hints of dark chocolate and spice, and a firm mineral backbone. Bright acidity, coupled with a detail of fine bitterness and savory finish, keeps the wine focused and energetic. Ready for drinking now, yet with enough structure to carry several more years of cellar-life.
