Region: Montsant DOC, Catalonia, Spain

Varietal: 40% Grenache, 40% Carignan, 40% Ull de Llebre (Tempranillo)

Producer: If Priorat is the rock star of Spanish reds, Montsant is its slightly quirky, equally brilliant sibling that prefers meaningful conversation over stadium tours. Buil & Giné is one of the classic estates helping shape that identity — family-run, rooted in local tradition, and unapologetically delicious. The name 17-XI references St. Gregory’s Day, a nod to the winery’s deep ties with village life around Falset in Montsant. This wine isn’t about big statements; it’s about being the one that goes with everything at the table and somehow steals the show anyway.

Vineyard & Winemaking: The grapes for 17-XI come from vineyards scattered across Montsant’s rugged terrain, sitting on weathered granite soils that lend lift and minerality to the grapes. The blend of Garnacha, Cariñena, and Tempranillo reflects the classic palette of the region’s red blends, with each variety fermented separately to capture its personality. Long maceration and malolactic fermentation add structure and softness, followed by several months aging in American oak before final blending and bottling. The result is a wine that’s approachable yet grounded in the sun-soaked terroir of Catalonia.

Tasting Notes: On the nose, 17-XI feels like a picnic of red fruits — think bright cherry, raspberry, and a hint of herbal spice — with a whiff of balsamic and oak in the background. The palate is fresh and lively, with juicy red fruit framed by brisk acidity and gentle tannins that keep it energetic rather than heavy. There’s a savory, mineral note that makes this wine incredibly versatile at the table; it loves everything from grilled sausages and mushrooms to salads with goat cheese or simply garlic-roasted chicken. It’s best enjoyed now through the next couple of years — easy to love, hard to put down.
