Region: San Luis Obispo Coast, California
Varietal: 65% Mourvèdre and 35% Grenache
Tasting Notes: Bright and wild with energetic lift, ‘Oso’ 2023 shows notes of juicy red berries, cracked pepper, and coastal herbs. The palate is light, savory, and slightly earthy, with fine tannins and a saline snap. With its low alcohol and natural vibrancy, it’s best served with a slight chill—deliciously expressive and unapologetically raw.
Producer: Brij Wines is the regenerative farming project of Rajat “Raj” Parr, one of the most influential voices in modern American wine. Known first as a celebrated sommelier and then as a co-founder of Domaine de la Côte and Sandhi, Parr has dedicated recent years to exploring the potential of California’s Central Coast through the lens of low-intervention winemaking and regenerative agriculture. Brij—his middle name and the winery’s namesake—reflects this personal and philosophical turn. Based at his Phelan Farm near Cambria on the San Luis Obispo Coast, Brij Wines champions native varieties, spontaneous fermentations, and wines that express place with purity and restraint.
Vineyard & Winemaking: The 2023 ‘Oso’ Red is sourced from Raj Parr’s own Phelan Farm, where regenerative viticulture is central—eschewing tilling, irrigation, and chemical inputs in favor of biodiversity and soil health. This blend of 65% Mourvèdre and 35% Grenache was harvested from vines grown just a few miles from the Pacific, where fog and cool breezes moderate ripening and preserve freshness. Fermented whole cluster with native yeasts and aged in neutral barrels, the wine is bottled without fining, filtration, or added sulfur—an unadorned, living snapshot of its coastal origins.
