Region: Etna, Sicily, Italy
Varietal: 100% Nerello Cappuccio
Tasting Notes: The wine is deep ruby with distinct violet nuances. Fine aromas of spices, herbs, smoke and delicate red fruit are met with a complementary palate that is dry and medium-bodied with satin tannins, a pleasant acidity and lingering, harmonious flavors of red fruit on the finish.
Producer: Benanti Viticoltori, a cornerstone of Etna’s wine revival, is one of Sicily's most prestigious wineries. The Benanti family has a deep-rooted connection to Etna's terroir, dating back to 1734 when they settled in Catania. However, it was in 1988 that Giuseppe Benanti revitalized the winery, transforming it into a beacon for high-quality wines from native Sicilian varieties. His innovative approach, combined with the unique volcanic landscape of Mount Etna, positioned Benanti as a pioneer in modern Etna viticulture. Today, the winery is run by Giuseppe’s sons, Antonio and Salvino, continuing the family’s legacy with an annual production of around 170,000 bottles. Their efforts have been instrumental in placing Etna on the global wine map, showcasing the diversity and potential of its indigenous grapes, such as Nerello Mascalese and Carricante.
Vineyard & Winemaking: While Benanti is well-known for wines like Etna Rosso made from predominantly Nerello Mascalese, their Nerello Cappuccio wines are equally noteworthy, highlighting the diversity of Etna’s indigenous grapes. Nerello Cappuccio, grown on volcanic soils on the southern and eastern slopes of Etna, brings an essential balance to the winery's red wine blends, adding softness, roundness, and delicate floral notes compared to the more structured Nerello Mascalese. Benanti’s vineyards, situated between 400 and 1,000 meters above sea level, benefit from the unique microclimate created by the volcano’s high altitude and mineral-rich soils, which impart a distinct elegance and freshness to their wines. The winery’s careful attention to terroir and traditional winemaking methods, coupled with its focus on sustainability and low-intervention techniques, ensures that each bottle of Nerello Cappuccio expresses the authentic character of Etna’s volcanic environment.
